Monthly Musings: March 2021
Hello friends! How are you keeping? I hope this Monthly Musings March post finds you both well rested and well caffeinated. I’m still riding the pastry making train from last month and honestly, pulling a homemade flaky AF croissant out of the oven literally never gets old. It makes me feel like a magician and a superhero all at once. I’ve also been spending some time over the last few weeks reconnecting with my teenage-self by playing on my Nintendo DS and listening to angsty loud music. It’s all about balance, friends.
Did you have a good month? As you might have predicted, we didn’t make it to the end of Dry February. As a matter of fact, we only made it 7-days in. In the normal world, giving up alcohol for the month would’ve been fine and I think we could’ve done it. In the pandemic world, enjoying a beer or glass of wine on the weekends is one of the few ways we can differentiate between days. So sue us.
Our Monthly Musings for March are below. I’ll be here, eating a slice of sourdough toast slathered with butter & blood orange marmalade – the stuff of dreams. Enjoy!
Monthly Musings: March 2021
Covid-19 update: schools are opening up again, but other than that we’re staying in Level 5 until at least April 5th. Staying in, not mingling, staying safe, but missing our families. My family did a mini Come Dine With Me competition during February and it was so sad not being able to take part in it! Aside from travel, I think I miss eating with loved ones the most.

Related: Pandemic Burnout is on the rise. Symptoms include feeling generally worn out and unable to cope with even the most simplest of tasks. Sorry, but who isn’t feeling like this lately?
*
There were two new recipes last month and two revamped oldies. Both of the new recipes are ones I’m extremely proud of – Brown Butter Chocolate Chunk Cookie Bar Hearts & Blood Orange Marmalade – but especially of the latter. It’s literally the most delicious marmalade I’ve ever tasted. The oldies were Lemon & Blueberry Heart Pies and Coffee Doughnuts – both of which have remained stellar recipes.

I finally finished posting all of my photo journals! It literally took me 6-months, but every trip I’ve taken since 2015 is officially on the blog! I’m so glad they’re all up here; looking back at old travel photos is one of my favourite things to do.
*
Did you watch the Framing Britney Spears documentary? Good lord – what a sad story! After watching it, I proceeded to fall down a deep Britney rabbit hole, listening to her old albums & even going so far as to watch Crossroads. I regret nothing. Boyfriend, however, regretted letting me have control of the TV.

Oscar nominations are hopefully coming out on the 15th of this month and I’m itching to know who’ll be nominated. I’ve been studying this Variety predictions list, and generally trying to watch as many new films as possible – potential nominees or not. Recent viewing has included: Songbird, which we both enjoyed / I Care A Lot, which I liked more / and Capone, which left us both underwhelmed. I miss going to the cinema… Sigh.

Okay, so I finally jumped on the Bridgerton train – and totally loved it. I’d like to say that it was the stunning locations that kept me interested, but it was definitely all about the cheese factor for me. No shame! We also watched Behind Her Eyes, but felt kind of meh about it when it diverted into sci-fi territory.
*
Are you reading anything exciting this month? I’ve been reading The Thursday Murder Club and it’s so good! Funny and mysterious and so intriguing!
*
I’ve had my eye on Benjamina’s The New Way to Cake book for a while, but when I saw her Hot Chocolate Pudding Cake on Genius Recipes, my interest went up a level. I’ve added both that and her Orange Brown Butter Cornmeal Cake to my to-bake list. I shall report back.
*
Did you see the Bonne Maman story circulating online? So heartwarming!
*
Please enjoy this interview with the most badass queen of them all, Martha Stewart.
*
An Irish folk rock band that I found by accident while fighting with Alexa: Hermitage Green. I feel like these are right up your street, Fódhla!
There we have it! I hope you found something to take away with you – maybe a recipe, a movie, or a book recommendation.
Until next month, friends!
Vicki xo.
Fancy a look back?
