Monthly Musings: October 2022

monthly musings: october 2022

Hello friends, happy Wednesday! Welcome to our Monthly Musings: October 2022 post! How the heck are you? In the dream scenario, you’re all healthy & happy, enjoying a nice creamy cappuccino in your favourite café, basking in the glow of the very best season. If, like me, you’re falling a little short of that, I at least hope you’re wearing your favourite jumper and drinking a home-brewed cuppa. Is it just me or did September feel really super long? Every day dragged, and the weeks crawled by at an absolute snail’s pace. Some days I literally felt like I lived & worked through 3-days worth of days, and it was only just coming up to 7pm; it was the oddest thing. It probably has something to do with my newly developed wedding planning tunnel vision – but more on that later.

Our musings for the month ahead are below. They’re filled with all the usual sorts of ramblings – recipes, travel guides, Covid-19 updates, and movie + book chatter. You read on, and I’ll be over here, drinking my coffee and daydreaming about travelling, the yoojh.

Covid-19 update: still no sign of younger people being offered a second booster, currently just 50-64 year olds. Not that it matters, because Fiancé & I wouldn’t be eligible anyway because we had Covid recently-ish; it’s so dumb the way Ireland makes you wait 4-months post-infection to get a booster. I’m hoping they’ll open it up to younger cohorts before the end of the year – ideally before we attend a wedding/travel to Italy in December. Sigh.

I feel like I spent the entire month of September under a dark cloud of wedding venue brochures. Even though our proposed wedding date is still ages away, I know that nailing down the venue will quell any planning anxiety for now. As of last weekend, we’ve officially narrowed the search to two spots with two very different wedding scenarios, hurrah! There is a light at the end of the brochure tunnel! Until we are absolutely 100% sure which venue we want, I’ll be over here creating page after page of pro/con lists – but I feel hopeful!

Side note: my family gifted me the most beautiful wedding planner for my birthday last month! The only problem is that it’s so beautiful that I’m actually afraid to write in it. Once I have my pro/con lists in some sort of respectable order, I plan on transferring them into the beautiful pages of my planner. Isn’t that just the craziest thing you’ve ever heard? Aside from my craziness, it’s such a helpful little book to have! Heaps of timelines and reminders about when you should be doing what, pages upon pages for keeping track of every. single. thing. The organizer in me absolutely loves it! Thanks again, fam 🙂

Fiancé’s film, The Accursed, is coming out later this month! The trailer dropped on YouTube last week and it looks! so! good! It’s going to showing in real-life CINEMAS across the States from October 14th, and I wish so badly we could see it on the big screen! Apparently it’ll be coming to Sky on the same day, so at least there’s that. It’s bizarre to think that he sold the script, it got put together & cast etc., filmed, edited and actually made into a bona fide movie, all in the space of just over a year! Insane! I’m so proud of you, Rob – congratulations!!

My first ever Canadian blog post is up: Exploring Summerside, Prince Edward Island! Next week I hope to share my second Canadian post about all things Lunenburg, and then at the end of the month my third, covering all things Halifax! I’m so excited! Did you get a chance to read the Summerside post? I might be biased, but I think it’s a goodie 😉 Also! Now that I have non-European travel guides up here, there is a new option in the travel dropdown menu above: North America! Right now the only country in there is Canada, obvz, but watch this space!

Related: I also got around to sharing A Stopover in Cologne, Germany last month! Fiancé & I were in Cologne for a little over 24-hours this past July, and the post covers everything we got up to during our trip. Aka: everywhere we went for one or more glasses of Kölsch. No matter what my feelings on the actual city may be, there’s no denying how good their beer is!

In case you missed it, I finally shared a new recipe to the blog: Small Batch Lemon Curd Cupcakes! It’s just a good base recipe to have up your sleeve, you know? In this instance I filled them with homemade lemon curd & topped them with a quick vanilla frosting. However! I have also been known to bake them sans lemon juice, and cover them with our all time favourite chocolate fudge frosting. Versatile and delicious!

I recently made this whipped feta dip with what could only be referred to as on-the-way-out feta and gosh, it really resurrected our tired cheese from the dead! It was delicious! Garlicky, salty, and so easy to make – would definitely recommend! We toasted some pine nuts to sprinkle over the top, and then proceeded to mop the whole dish up with a loaf of homemade bread, *chef’s kiss*.

Spooky season is upon us and that can only mean one thing – scary movies! We’ve already re-watched the latest Scream movie – not great, but good fun regardless. Also! Hocus Pocus 2: what joy! We watched it this past weekend with some wine + fudge brownies and were pleasantly surprised! We’re off to see Smile later today, and the OG Halloween, Scream, and Psycho will all follow in good time. TV-wise, we’re enjoying the cheesy bad-goodness that is Scream Queens; it’s very seasonally appropriate! What’s on your Halloween watch-list?

Have you read anything good recently? I just finished up an advanced copy of Jodi Picoult + Jennifer Finney Boylan’s book, Mad Honey, and totally loved it! Very unusual, extremely un-put-down-able, and so well written that I feel I’ve watched a movie more so than read a book. Would 100% recommend.

Oldie but a goodie: Pear Spice Cake with Brown Butter Frosting & Dark Chocolate Drip. I feel I always use this recipe as my ‘oldie but goodie’ choice in October, but some recipes are just extremely rooted in certain seasons and months! #sorrynotsorry.

And there we have it, our Monthly Musings: October 2022 post! I hope you have the most wonderful month – let’s catch up again in November, yeah?
