Ham & Gruyère Breakfast Rolls

Why are we always drawn to the things that are wrong for us? Or why do we always do the exact thing someone has just told us not to do? It’s like when you tell little children not to play with super-glue because it’s dangerous. Well, I’m exactly the same when it comes to making food. When Mom tells me that she’s trying to cut down on the amount of bread she eats, I simply have to make some form of bread or I’ll explode. At the mere mention of the word diet in the house, I insist on making a big batch of cookies. I am the stubborn kid with her hand super-glued to her face.

I personally just cannot wrap my head around someone cutting something out of their diet just because blah blah blah. Like sure, it kind of makes sense if you want to be healthier or some other reason like that, but why would you deprive yourself of the goodness? I just don’t think it’s worth it. A life without bread? Madness. A diet where you can’t eat cookies? Just kill me now. There’s a simple reason for all this: I love my food. Everyone knows that if you for some reason you’re giving me a present, the best option is always food. One year, my sister bought me an Apple Pie for my birthday, it was like all my dreams came true at once.

So when Mom said that she wanted to eat less bread, I tired to understand. I tried to reason with myself & told myself that I would hold off on making bread for as long as I could. Even if I didn’t understand it, I should try to be supportive. Come the end of the day, I had found this recipe & it was impossible trying to erase it from my mind. I had to make it. I have no idea why I was so drawn to it, I’d never even tried Gruyère cheese before. The whole idea just really appealed to me – smoked ham, along with melted cheese AND a béchamel sauce, wrapped up inside a lovely warm roll of homemade bread? For breakfast? Yes please.

Besides, I love having homemade bread. I love going through the process of rising the dough, beating it back into shape, letting it rise up again, you’re so involved. Telling people that you made that bread is one of the best feelings in the world, it never fails to impress. There’s just something amazing about it.

The recipe for these Ham & Gruyère Breakfast Rolls came into my life when I was doing my usual food blog catch-up & I simply had to make them. The recipe is adapted from a Smitten Kitchen recipe for Cheddar & Onion Breakfast Buns, which I’m sure would be just as lovely. These Breakfast Rolls are my ideal satisfying mid morning breakfast. They’re carby, they’re cheesy & gooey, & they’re really extremely flavoursome, mostly thanks to the smoked ham. The Gruyère gives each roll a little kick & emits a delicious smell all around the house, bringing everyone to the breakfast table. If you’re looking to spoil your dad this Father’s Day, whip up these Ham & Gruyère Breakfast Rolls the night before, & then simply pop in the oven when you get up in the morning. Simple, right?
