Countries of the World

Hi, my name is Vicki and I’m a travel addict.

Travel is my very favourite thing to do, and nothing sounds more appealing to me than flying through the clouds en route to a new destination. For years, I’ve been keeping detailed notes and tracking every place I visit on my travels. How many flights I’ve been on, what cities I’ve explored, and, of course, how many countries I’ve been to.

If you’re curious, here’s a little peek at my list keeping:

CONTINENTS VISITED: 4/7

COUNTRIES VISITED: 29/200

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES EXPLORED: 61/1,199

FLIGHTS TAKEN: 130

HOURS SPENT THINKING ABOUT TRAVEL: countless

Now, naturally, there’s an official number of countries recognized by the United Nations – but I don’t necessarily agree with them. And then it hit me, why don’t I make my own list? And so, I bring you: Countries of the World, according to me! You can read about how I came up with 200 countries at the very bottom of this page.

All of the countries and continents listed in bold below are places I have visited, and all of the underlined ones are places I’ve blogged about. You can click on these links to read posts about my travels there!

total: 200*

how I arrived at 200

• the list above includes all 193 fully recognized members of the United Nations, except for the United Kingdom. This makes 192 countries.

• I have added the 4 member countries of the UK to the list individually. When you include England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, the number goes from 192 to 196.

• Palestine and Vatican City are listed above, because although they aren’t official members of the UN, they’re both recognized as non-member observer states. Adding in these two countries brings the total from 196 to 198.

• similarly, Kosovo and Taiwan are not member states, but they are recognized by certain UN member states, and so they’re listed above. This brings the total country count from 198 to an even 200.

*obviously, this is by no means an official world count, just something to help me keep track of my personal travels 🙂
